BR resident begins career as high-end shoe designer
Lele. Aileen. Audrey.
Those are more than names to Baton Rouge resident Dee Keller. They are her creations — shoes she has designed. At 47, the former lawyer and stay-at-home mother of four has begun a new career as a high-end shoe and handbag designer.
The website for her company, Dee Keller Design, shows dozens of shoe designs and each has a name that means something to her: Lele is her youngest daughter; Aileen is the friend who helped her make a dream a reality; and Audrey is her late mother.
“It’s one that I’ll do every year,” Keller said of the Audrey. “It’s a staple. I wanted to remember her that way.”
Keller has been passionate about fashion all her life. Joining the designing ranks had been in her mind for a long time before jumping into the fray last year after asking herself, “Why not now?”
There was no good answer to that, and life has been a whirlwind ever since. Keller has learned everything from the proper pitch and sole of a shoe to designing shoeboxes.
